The NDIS provides funding to purchase assistive technology to help support people living with disabilities to live a normal life. If you have been qualified for AT funding, this is just the start of your journey. Finding the right AT for you are one of the key factors that will help you reach your goal. Here, we would like to feature OrCam MyEye.
OrCam MyEye is a tiny, portable voice-activated device with a smart camera. It can be attached to an eyeglass to help assist the visually impaired individual to perform daily functions. It is important to note that this device does not allow the visually impaired to regain eye vision.
How does it work?
The built-in camera snaps a picture of texts and transcribes the gathered information via a small earpiece, thereby, allowing the individual to independently read any text materials without supervision.
The following are just a few features of the device:
Versatility:
It does not require any internet connection and can function anytime anywhere
Read Text:
It conveniently transcribes pictures into an audible form which enables the individual to read emails, books, newspapers, and the likes
Instinctive:
It identifies and responds to hand signals, gestures and has a face recognition feature. Another cool feature of this device is that recognizes barcodes and can even identify products
If you do not have AT funding yet and you think that this device will help you reach your NDIS goals, speak with your support coordinator and know the steps you need to partake to obtain funding. Do note that just like any other funding it has to be reasonable and necessary and you should be able to provide pertinent documents like an AT assessment, quotation of the device, and most importantly provide an explanation of how this device will help you reach your NDIS goals.
